Zimasa could not believe how life changes so fast. She was busy packing her bags at Carlos’s apartment. She was going overseas, her first trip abroad. If you told her two years back that by this time she was going to be engage to Carlos, she would have told you ” you are crazy”. She was still amazed that two years back she was madly in love with her college sweetheart Simphiwe. But here she was now looking forward in meeting Carlos family in Mexico and from the endless Skyper conversations she knew that they were also looking forward to the meeting. Zimasa never imagined life without Simphiwe before that horrible near death experience. Every time she thinks about that day the taste in her mouth turns salty, her throat gets dry as if she was left in the Karoo for days and her stomach feels like the Kimberly great hole. How it’s true when they say ” you must always leave a room for disappointments” maybe in her case for betrayal and confusion.
One of the cleaners told her at a certain eating place around the mall they scullery ( dishwasher) dropped them at a last minute for a vacancy at the Clock Towers. They gave the directions and wished her good like and she followed it to the shop.
She pushed the door open and walked in the greek themed eating place with the chef shouting out his lungs for “service”, but nobody was coming and he saw her called her, to come fetch the food from the pass to it’s table. Before she could even answer and explain herself the chef’s back was turned and him on the scullery’s case. Defenseless she went to the pass and took the plates shaking and unsure what she was doing but she did not want that angry chef to turn around and see those plates still there. Lucky as she was looking around for a waiter to give over the plates a cute thick, curly, chocolate brown hair well build guy in a blue shirt and the most brightest red tie took the plates from her and gave her the most warmest smile that could melt any ice. She smiled back and ask for the manager, the cute guy told her to give him just a second in the meantime to go have a sit at the bar and ask the bar man for something to drink. She went but could not get herself the courage to ask the barman for that drink. She was busy fiddling in her bag for her cv and a greeting from behind made her turn. The waiter she gave the plates to was standing behind her and extending his hand to introduce himself”hi my name is Carlos Fernando owner of this place” she could not talk for few minutes ( she chocked). She stood up from the chair and shook the hand and also return the greeting with an introduction ” Zimasa, and I’m looking for a job” that just slipped out of her tongue without thinking. He showed her to the nearest table and they went and sit down asked for her cv looked through it and just made a remark about her being a student. She said yes and that’s one of the reasons she was looking for a job. Without saying much he called one of the waiters who came rushing in looking all confuse and told him that she just being offered his job from now on he must train her for the next two weeks, and all his shifts will be night shift because she is a student. She will only be able to do night shifts. He looked at her and said ” hi my name is Mark and I’m the head waiter and welcome to the madhouse” she giggled a bit and at least now she was calm and more relax. Mark went to the bar and came back with a cafe latte and an orange juice put the tray down and offered Zimasa the juice and the latte to Carlos and then he disappeared. Carlos told her to come back the following evening wearing a jean,t-shirt and comfortable shoes. She would start her training as a waiter. She thanked her and she was over the moon with joy she could not wait to finish her juice leave and call Simphiwe to tell him the good news. She finished her juice in a split of a second Carlos organised the training manual for her and told her to be back tomorrow evening 15 minutes before her shift which will be starting at five o clock. She thanked him and left. Her heart was jumping out of her ears with excitement. She reached for her bag and took out her cellphone called Simphiwe but his number was on voicemail ” maybe he is at practice” she thought to herself and left a voice recorded message. (Yeah right talk about serious practice). She went straight home to go fix her clothes and go through the training manual and also plan on how she was going to juggle school and work. Took a taxi to Cape Town and then went to the Khayelitsha train on her way home she saw some of her college mates and were telling her about Simpiwe’s great fortune at school that day, a certain sport institute was at the college because they saw Simphiwe’s video running some local race and they took an interest on him. They research about him led them to the college and they had a word with Simphiwe about a sponsorship deal. Simphiwe did not tell them wether he was going to take deal or not but went with the sponsors to a nearby coffee shop and that’s where they left him. She could not believe her ears, wow everything was falling into place for them. She went straight home with few stops and greetings with friends and neighbours all wishing her well in her times of difficulties and praying for her mother’s soul to go back to the Lord. She got home her mom still in bed she assume because the house was as she left it, by the way she was use to find her mom in bed whole day and wake up at night and go to the nearest drinking hole till the wee hours of the morning and come back shouting from the first corner till by her door calling out her husband to come back to her. That was the norm and the whole community knew that. She got inside went to the kitchen on the kitchen table she saw empty beer bottles and heard some voices in her mothers bedroom. Last night she thought she was dreaming when she heard that her mom was in a jolly good mood and was speaking to somebody when she returned home. She placed her bag down and went to the direction of her mom’s room. She knocked at the door and her mom answered ” come in Zizi” she pushed the door open and went inside the room. In the room the curtains were close as usual ever since her dad left that’s the picture of her mom’s room. Dim and gloomy with misery hanging in the air. Her mom was lying in bed but surprisingly she was not alone, a man’s hand was across her body she greeted her, ‘ molo mama and how was your day?” or night whatever time zone is in her head. She greeted back with a smile something Zimasa don’t see that often on her mom, she is forever screaming, shouting and cursing even a poor fly. ” hayi ndiyaphila Zizi I just wanted you to come in and meet my boyfriend next week we are getting married” the person who had his hand across her mom’s body lift up his head and greet her. ‘ Molo sisi, my name is Good enough Nyakaka I love this lady very much I want to marry her” Zimasa was dumbstruck how and when did her mother found love, yesterday morning she hated all men how did they from one minute being dogs turned into marriage types again. Hayi her mom was moving too fast for her. She did not know what to say and whether this was a way of them asking for her blessings. She ignored the two love birds who were so happy honeymoon came before the actual wedding, whatever they were doing under those blankets she did not want to be a witness. Her mom kept on giggling like a school girl and this Good enough person was not making it easy for her she was not sure if he was pitching her under the blankets but his hand was moving and seemed to be pressing all the right buttons of her mom. Oh I got a job she manage to squeeze that in somewhere and surprising her mom heard her. She started to sing” yhoooo my baby is a young woman now, she is going to go work for her mommy”Zimasa did not have the energy to burst her mom’s bubble and she still had a lot on her plate to go through. ” Mom I will see you later I need to go study” she told her as she was moving to the door to leave the two honeymooners alone her mom told her to grab Good enough’s pants and take out some money from his wallet and go buy some food and few beers for them, they need to celebrate her engagement and Good enough was willing and able. She told them it was fine she had few cents of her own she will use that and left the room. She rushed straight to the bathroom, she was sick from her stomach and also angry at her moms worsening behaviour now she took a total stranger to their home, how worse can it get? They might as well sleep with the doors all open. She got to the bathroom wanted to throw up but nothing came out. Cleaned herself and went to her room. Simphiwe called late that evening saying that he is sorry was out of contact the whole day,and today he won’t be able to come and visit her. He must go somewhere, something about Stellenbosch University but Zimasa did not have a problem with that, and she was just happy to have more time to herself to prepare for tomorrow and she wanted to go to varsity before work. They spoke for a while over the phone,Zimasa told him about her new job and her mom ” the bride to be”. Eventually they said they good bye and promises of seeing each other the following day. Zimasa went to the kitchen to go make supper. In the honeymoon suit it was quiet and she assumed they were sleeping and that was perfect because she did not think she was strong enough to deal with those two morons in there. Simphiwe and Zimasa could not believe what happened that day, just like that a boy from nowhere could be a brand ambassador for a world wide brand? Wow, miracles do happen and that was Simphiwe’s day.
Zimasa woke up in hospital five days after the accident she was at the Somerset Hospital just across the road from the Waterfront. When she opened her eyes for the first time in days. She was greeted by that smiling face she saw at the restaurant at the Waterfront, she tried to smile back but every part of her was in pain and her throat was dry. Carlos told her not to move, and brought her a glass of water. She took a sip and forced a smile. Carlos was so happy to see her awake again. He did not know what to do. He gave her a big hug and a kiss in the cheek and was saying a thank you prayer silently. She looked around the room, yes it was a hospital room, private ward with bright colors and beautiful flowers. Carlos reassured her that everything will be fine and all is sorted out. Her mother is in rehab by the help of Mark, Carlos and social workers. Carlos tried to update with everything. He told her not to stress about anything, she still has her job. She can take her time to heal and not rush herself. She wanted to ask him about Simphiwe and she was struggling yo utter words as if he knew what she wanted to say, she told her that Simphiwe came to the hospital few times, she told him it’s fine fine she will deal with him when he came around again now that she was awake. From that day on Carlos was by her side. He paid for her medical expenses and when she was discharged from hospital Carlos came to fetch her and told her she is going to stay with him until she was completely heal and the hospital was nearby where he stayed In Seapoint. Simphiwe came several times when she was still in hospital and tried to explain his side of the the story, but she told him she was not interested, she forgives him and wished him well on his new journey. He told him that the who stabbed her was out on bail and she can continue with the court case if wish to do so and how sorry he was things turned that way between them. She was still hurting and her heart was in thousand pieces, maybe she had too much going on in her life and Simphiwe sticked around because he felt sorry for her. Whatever the reasons were for Simphiwe to do what she did to her, she paid the price. She did not lay charges against that girl. She told Simphiwe she is forgiving them, and they must just leave her alone. Days at Carlos apartment were wonderful. He was funny, charms and an angel to live with. They got to get to know each other better. Carlos had a three bedroom apartment and she was using the spare room. They enjoyed each other’s company and after two months and Zimasa no longer have nasty scars, she started going back to work for few days and every time she mentioned her leaving and going back home, Carlos will change the subject. She started being use full around the apartment on her off days cooking supper and doing laundry Carlos did have a cleaning lady but she used to come for only two days in the week, so she was fine with the little gratitude she can show him for everything he did for her. One evening after work on they way driving to Sea Point Carlos told her that he is in love with her and he wished they could spend Christmas together that year, and he understood and did not want to rush things. She did not know what to say eventually she caught her breathe and told him, she enjoys his company but about love she still need sometime to heal and going back home was not really that appealing because she will be all be herself, she could not help to wonder what happened to GoodEnough her mom was just another creation of a different sort. She agreed spending more time with him and continuing staying by him. And as we all know the rest was history. Now they were going to meet Carlos family and Zimasa was glowing with happiness.
